With the arrival of summer Salesian houses get geared to a large number of activities, more vibrant, noisy, colourful, joining hands with a big team of student Salesians, volunteers, and sponsors, all focused at making boys and girls of our presences more cheerful, good and holy. DBAI, Salem has had this experience this summer in and through the seven camps it conducted in various places for different target groups everyone sharing the tag ‘poor and abandoned’.

Area Camp: Chinnamapalayam
This summer the ‘Summer Gallatta’ had found its way right in the beginning of April with the English cum Computer camp for the higher secondary students in and around Salem. Along with English and Basic Computing Skills the students had the unique experience of Salesian Summer Camp under the guidance of Bro. Justin sdb and co-operation of Mr. Bala, Mr. Kannan and Mr. Periyanayagam. It catered to thirty two students all recruited from areas we work through the year in and around Salem. It was duplicated in the month of May from 01st – 24th for the boys and girls of the age group between thirteen and fifteen. In this second camp, there were again 32 students from different areas in and around Salem.

Picnicing
However everyone had to wait for the Boys Camp ‘Invitation for Integral life – Summer Gallata 2013’ for a mind-blowing effect of summer camps in Salem. With all due preparations the Boys Camp had its solemn inauguration on 2nd May and lasted till the middle the month, 16th May 2013. These less than fifteen days were filled with fun, activities, prayers, games, walks, hikes, laughter, learning, visits by important persons, good food for thought and body. There were 80 participants in this camp all from our residential boarding in Adivaram and Mulluvadi Gate, but for a handful from CWC. They were from primary upto higher secondary. This camp was the highlight of this summer with more colours and team work under the guidance of the director Fr. Amalorpavaraj, and Adminsitrator Fr. Selvakumar; the skilful organisation of clerics Bros. Rubin, Justin, James and Sathish and the assistance of staffs Mr. Xavier, Ms. Jaya, Mas. Guru and volunteers Ms. Charlotte (Germany), Ms. Hannah (Germany), Mr. Pradeep and Mr. Rohit (Our Local Volunteers). Moreover it enjoyed the active participation of the MBA students from Sona College, Salem at different intervals during the camp.

English Classes
Apart from these the staff of our institute under the guidance of the director and other Salesians conducted four camps in our reach-out areas namely Sanniyasigundu, Kitchipalayam, Chinnamapalayam and Patchapatti. Through these camps we might have reached out to a minimum of 200 boys and girls mostly economically poor in these places from 02 May till 15 May 2013. Altogether the beneficiaries of ‘Summer Camp 2013 at DBAI, Salem’ would be atleast 350 boys and girls.

Tailing Training and Scree Printing
Other than the regular camping experience our students had the unique experience of interacting with people from different areas of interest and at times had half day workshop with them. For example we had persons who were interested in conserving environment, history, activists, self-motivation gurus, cultural artists, government officials, NGOs, star gazers and others. These camps were aimed to cultivate in our boys and girls genuine happiness, love, sensitivity, honesty, responsibility for their life, family, society and the environment. We pray these initial sparks catch up to become wild fire in their lives.
